My transformation was not about becoming a new person. My transformation was becoming more of who I have always been. My personal transformation required me to get control of the mental gymnastics that had negative beliefs and horrible self-talk tumbling around in my brain for all hours of the day and night.
It's hard to heal from past traumas when your primary active verbal abuser is yourself.
That's where meditation came in. When I embarked on my healing journey, step #1 was to increase my awareness of these disempowering thoughts and beginning the process of reprogramming them. You can't reprogram thoughts that you're not aware of.
But I have a confession to make …
As much as meditation has been my companion in the last decade, I've let the practice slip away. I've been on the "go" for a couple of months straight now. So much so that I've deprioritized some of the activities that keep me balanced, sane, and grounded.
For a decade, I meditated daily. I called it my daily non-negotiable.
You can read in my bestselling book The Nature of Transformation (or by the book here) that I believe that a regular meditation practice is a life saver. I know it saved my life.
But I've stepped away from it. My schedule changed. I've had a lot of things on my never ending to-do list. I start early in the morning and often continue working into the evening. I'm basically working 2 full time jobs. With too many tasks on my task list, and my Gemini brain, I've just been ping-ponging through my days.
Make no mistake. I can feel the impact of stepping away from my practice.
I'm on the verge of anxiety or tears (or both at the same time) a lot more often. Meditation gives me perspective. And without perspective, the things that I have to deal with seem bigger and more catastrophic than they really are.
I've been productive. There is no doubt about it. But I have these lulls where my concentration hits rock bottom. I'm not feeling the flow. You know the flow... where you get into a rhythm and everything just comes together.
